August 28, 2005: Sketchy Comedy at the Studio

This is two clips in one. Two really, really dark clips in one, at least until I figure out whether I can brighten the DVD output, but still — two in one. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Trust me.

First up, there’s a quick sketch — part of Erin Judge’s Sunday Showcase spectacular. I play a hayseed. I get sexually abused at a job interview. Twice. It’s very tasteful. No. Really.

Immediately after, my standup turn was up, so I came back for six minutes of jokes and jocularity. Still as a hayseed, more or less. I’ve been typecast for thirty-five years; you can’t expect me to shake the character off that easily.

But if you’ve been skeptical of my range, this is the clip for you. By god, I can suck the funny out of the room in two comedic formats. That’s versatility, folks. I’m a double threat!

August 3, 2005: A Thin Thursday at the Studio

In this set, I went back to the ‘magic pencil’ story. I hadn’t tried it for a while, and I figured a Dan Sally Spectacular at the Studio would be a good opportunity. I also took another shot at some of the ‘family’ material I’d been working on.

(That’s not ‘family-friendly‘ material, to be sure. Don’t get confused, kids. And don’t try these jokes at home. Or, probably, anywhere.)

At any rate, it was a pretty light crowd that night, but it was good to revisit a few older bits. And, as always, the Studio was a blast to play. Thanks to Rick and Dan for having me, and for another cool DVD clip to play with.

May 25, 2005: Parental Guidance at the Studio

This was an interesting set. There was a smallish weekday crowd at the Studio, so I tried out a few things I’d been working on concerning families. Parental issues, dead relatives, oral sex and Jesus — pretty standard stuff, really.

Look, I was exploring here. Trying out material. Don’t give me that look. It’s part of the process, dammit.

Anyway, have a look. A few of the lines worked out, a few need some work, and a few… well, let’s just say that mom and dad wouldn’t be so proud. Still — I had fun, so what more could I accomplish, really? It’s a weekday.

May 8, 2005: Dark Days at the Studio

This was another Sunday night show at the Studio — always a lot of fun, and what a way to wrap up a weekend. This clip also marks the start of what I call my ‘dark period’. Not in terms of content — I’m still telling the same wacky interview tales and three-minute dick jokes, naturally. But the video from the Studio’s DVR — or my editing software, one or the other — seems to have sucked most of the light out of this clip, and the next few, as well.

What’s that you said? ‘Sort of like how your jokes suck the funny out of the room’? Oh, that’s good. Nice talk. You should write that one down.

Now hush up and watch the clip. You can fling your zingers on your own time, smartass.

May 1, 2005: May Day at the Studio… Mayday, Mayday!

This was an appearance on Erin Judge’s showcase at the Studio. I posted the clip several months after performing, so I’m honestly not sure about the details of the performance.

Erin’s shows are always a hoot, though, and they sometimes ask me to help out with the skits they perform between acts. Might this have been the night I played a beefy lesbian biker? Or the time I was a hayseed physically accosted at a job interview? The answers to those questions are, sadly, lost to history. On the good side, though, I’ve got nearly seven minutes of comedy to show for the night, and I seem to be having a great time. Have a peek.
